Tour du Mont Blanc – Sep 2022

It’s Starts High & Stays High

Refugio Bertone to Elena – Sept 4th 2022

But first – last night 3rd Sept at Berthone – Another one of the famous names along the TMB. It is open from 8 June to 21st September. The clue in the short season for all these refugees is just how extreme conditions can be outside of this small window.

You could Snow Shoe up here in Winter. If stranded they have 4 refuge beds in the Cellar

Actually, it is about time I started using the Italian names of our destinations – we have been in the country for a day or so. So last nights stay was at 🇮🇹 Rifugio Giorgio Bertone 🇮🇹.

Our Descent to Bertone was “scenic” ( in a land of superlatives I’m saving “amazing & spectacular” for scenery grades 7 to 10.

Scenery- Barely a 5 in these parts

The accommodation a mix of bunks and shelves – we had the luxury of BUNKS here.

.

Cant find any photos of us in Bertone – maybe next time .

And so to this morning – Sebastian kept the briefing inside today as it was cloud covered up here early on – he knew this would begin to clear – so we spoke over coffee- very civilized.

Our destination is Refuge Chalet Elena (5-7hrs, 704m/2310ft ascent)
Today we have a major but scenic crossing to make, with great views over the ‘Grandes Jorasses’.

We begin by ascending to the flanks of Mont de la Saxe, followed by a steep ascent to a col immediately below the summit of Tete de la Tranche (2584m). From here the southern face of Mont Blanc is really quite spectacular.

We will pass through the high mountain pastures of Arminal, Malatra and Arnuva, before climbing up to Elena refuge where there are excellent views to the glacier and mountains beyond. Overnight refuge with shower.
16-18km, 704m/2310ft ascent, 631m/2070ft descent.

Reaching Elena had me walking slower over the high passes at 2600 Metres . I’d had a “moment” on the second night when thin air was noticeable. But now acclimatised it’s ok – I just pace the hike.

Today and yesterday – not dramatic ascent – 2000 to 3000 ft but it’s all at height – right from the start .

The Road to Elena was hot – a couple of boots off stops today

…… but everyone’s in good spirits , just being with good company , Alpine nature and enjoying the exercise makes the Way easier

….. people graduate towards Thom & Luke – I love seeing that , what’s more they enjoy each others company …..

We passed a 1st & 2nd world war fortified barracks and Swiss border observation post. Home to the “Alpini” the Italian Mountain Corps – motto Di Qui Non Si Passa! (“Nobody passes here!”)

Not sure who would want to pass really – the Swiss weren’t up for moving and Bigfoot never showed .

Imagine being here in Winter 🥶

Rifugio Elena – made its welcome appearance.

Hot day – glad we got there early

We grabbed a behemoth of a bunk each – threw our stuff in there and went to the bar. Dinner was good , verandah views the normal level of Fab’ as I recall .

Tomorrow will be a challenge maybe. Marie-France one of our group – part of 4 people from Quebec is unwell. Has been for 2 days … looks medical other than feet or legs. She doesn’t want to leave the TMB – it’s been a dream if hers since childhood- tomorrow a decision will be made.

Everyone 💤 is out like a light by 9.45pm and unlike Camino there’s no curfew here. No need.
