Tall Ships Camino Inglés – June 2024

North Atlantic Swells

As we enter the Atlantic fully with a brisk Northerly wind powering us on a South/SouthWest 205 degrees course my best anti- sea sickness preparations count for nothing.

I’m the first of the crew to succumb. If I can find a shred of optimism I’m also the first to recover .

I’ve packed industrial strength patches , Dramamine pills and pressure point wrist bands. They all stand me in good stead over the next week – each works well – but I suppose its something you just have to go through.

At one point a long line of Barcogrinos * a name I’ve revived for Nautical Pilgrims – were sat outside Mid-deck each holding their own bucket. Like me – each will acclimatize to be able to eat hearty fare supplied by Chef Natalia at any time , in any situation – it’s simply a right of passage.

We’re really moving now and the speed is thrilling.

With a great deal of satisfaction that 90% of the crew are fit and able. 2 or 3 have lingering motion symptoms but with shared Meds and group support they surface a day or two later to continue their adventure.

For me a focus on ship related tasks and responsibilities works well and along with those who want a regular turn at the helm is welcome. Even enjoyable now !!

It’s pretty cold so 4 layers min’ recommended

Good company , hot coffee and those legendary toasties – the hours roll by .

Lessons in steering , maintaining course , judging the sail setting and hauling the right ropes provide texture to the day and night .

The rewards are glimpses of sunrise from the wheel .

The day breaks are something to look forward to as we are lucky with the weather and will be the whole week.

Sunup means this treat – a real privilege as we get into days 2 and 3 .

Down into the Bay of Biscay properly and the sense of one ship solitude , especially on dawn Watch is remarkable.

Helm station is the busy Centre on Watch as it’s also sheltered. Front of the boat watch for anything from small craft or lost 40ft containers is a lot colder but provides Panorama such as this.

Sun up , a good strong wind and there’s talk of making the crossing in record time – maybe even 4 days instead of 7 . Now that’s an interesting challenge if it proves correct.

My Sea legs appear to be working well and the effect of the long , lopping greyhound swell of the Atlantic is forgotten – what a difference from only a few days ago .

The winds up – sails good and I thought I’d video the sails to show the speed …… good job I was as I hear a shout – look ! , LOOK ! …. In the water! ……

Hard to glimpse , terrible video , probably over excited . But my days !! – Dolphins !!

Now I know that Dolphins following are even possible – I’m going to make sure I get clearer video than this 😄

I manage just one photo

…….. but hope for more over the next few days

Until then xxx

absolutely superb blogging so interesting listening to you describing your adventures, was wondering how your sea sickness would fare ove the bay but glad it’s been minimal, I feel your pain as a fellow motion sufferer so I’m glad your able to enjoy the thrill of the boat now ……
